Networking 101

Recently, I have been asked a lot of questions about how to successfully network. Fortunately, networking and collaboration have been two things that I have been successful with thus far in my career.

My general consensus is that a lot of people view networking as a chore or unnatural task. For the most part, people understand that there is value in networking but the initial social investment outweighs the eventual networking return.

Midway through my doctoral degree – when my research productivity and extracurricular activity began to peak – I hit a wall!

The mental energy that I needed to do more was there, but my physical energy had run its course. I was physically exhausted and I needed a solution fast to keep up my life pace, so I looked around at university upper admin and highly productive professors to find the solution to a problem that they all appeared to had mastered. Using Your Newly Acquired Skills in the Community

As a scholar – at all levels (high school, undergrad, grad) – it is easy to forget that you are acquiring skills and knowledge that the world at-large does not possess. Everybody doesn’t go to or graduate from high school. The amount of people that go on to graduate with an undergraduate degree are even less. Even more minuscule is the number of people who obtain a professional-level degree (i.e. PhD, MD, JD, etc.).
